What is GP rating course
To join merchant navy, after class 10th, general purpose course is done, we call it merchant navy GP rating course. This course is of 6 months duration. This is a pre sea training course.
The GP rating program prepares candidates for two key positions in the marine industry. Deck and engine ratings serve to prepare candidates for both these positions.
Individual courses are provided for the LOOK and Engine Rating of these programs, however the GP Rating combines the two and the DECOR Engine Rating serves to educate the candidate for both components.
This course is organized twice a year. Every year the classes start in the month of January and July.
What is the role of the GP rating course on board?
You join Deck or Engine through the GP rating course. Based on this your profile changes.
Each candidate serving in the Engine Department has one duty to work with the Engineer or in a new unmanned vessel during the day.
You need to keep your environment clean and check the oil level and parameters of the machines.
Your job is to assist the engineer in cleaning the engine parts and engine room.
The guys in the deck department have to keep your watch in good condition by removing the rust and then pasting it back.
You have to obey the master ship and the directors of the officers and bosuns.
Eligibility for GP rating course
Educational Qualification
- Must have passed 10th or 12th class from any recognized school with minimum 40% marks in English Science and Maths.
Note : For persons who have passed their 10th class.
- Pass in 2 years Industrial Training Institute course certified by National Council of Vocational Training with at least 40% marks in the final
Note : For persons who wish to pursue GP Rating Course for Feeder or Welder.
- Candidates must be physically and medically fit.
- Candidates should be able to undertake sea travel.
- The vision of the candidate should be 6/6 in both the eyes.
- Apart from this, the candidate should not be color blind.
- The candidate must be physically and medically fit.
Age Limit :
- Minimum Age – 17.5 years
- Maximum Age – 25 years
Medical Standards :
- Minimum Height – 157 cms
- Weight – 48 kg
- Should be physically fit for sea
Eyesight/ Vision
- Color blindness is not permitted
- The vision of the candidate should be 6/6 in both the eyes.
- Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits.

Preeti course for GP rating ranges from approximately ₹ 120000 to ₹ 500000, which can be paid in one or more installments as per the rules of the institution. It is depends on the college’s the candidate get selected
According to Merchant Navy Decoded, fees of only three colleges TS Rahman, NUSI Goa and Great Eastern Institute of Management Studies have been included in a separate block GP Rating Colleges.
The disadvantage of this course is that there is a possibility of education loan, under this course, you cannot get education loan, it is not a degree course,
that’s why we are not able to get education loan under any bank or government scheme and that is why many students Due to lack of money, they are not able to join merchant navy.

- In training period as an ordinary gets 200 to 300 $.
